artist statement
A sense of place is a universal concept that each of us can
understand. Exploring different locations, whether mentally or
physically, adds color and richness to our individual biographies
and broadens how we think about our world. Considering my own life,
community, world and universe I explore my personal point of view in
relation to others and visually transfer those thoughts to my work.
Using techniques such as pattern, value contrast and juxtaposition
of unlike elements, I start layering paint or ink with collage and
other materials to create depth in each composition. As I work, I
let the emerging visual speak to me and adjust colors, textures and
lines based on that exchange. Moving from the big picture to the
smallest of details, from chaos to order, I create compositions
reflecting my own personal viewpoint of place.
